New Phish asks for NCUA "security" renewal.

CUNA News Now-Washington- The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) is the target of yet another phishing scam--this time attempting to scam people into "activating" an online account.

The phishing e-mail is addressed to "Dear CU holder account" and says that "your Credit Union bank has joined our Federal Credit Union (FCU) network."  THERE IS NO SUCH NETWORK.

It then asks the recipient to activate an online account, using Social Security number and credit/debit card PIN.

The e-mail's subject line reads "Confirm Your NCUA Identity" and uses graphics and text similar to the regulator's website. It claims to be from the "NCUA Account Reveiw Department."

It also tries to draw in recipients with the claim "Please understatnd that this is a security measure intended to protect you and your account."

The federal regulator emphasizes the importance of NOT responding to these e-mails on its website.

NCUA does not ask credit union members for such personal information. Anyone who receives an e-mail that purports to be from NCUA and asks for account information should consider it to be a fraudulent attempt to obtain their personal account data for an illegal purpose and should not follow the instructions in the e-mail.  Contact the credit union immediately if you receive such an e-mail.

Phish Scam Poses as "America's Credit Union"
CUNA and several leagues fielded a number of calls and e-mails from credit
union members and others on Sept. 12 who had received a phishing scam for
personal information from “Credit Union.” The scam used the Credit Union
  System’s “America’s Credit Unions” logo.

The e-mail scam sent to a member of Carolina Collegiate FCU purported to be
from “security@creditunion.coop” and posed as a security alert for the credit
union. Another message posed as the “F.C.U. Security Department” at the
  National Credit Union Administration (NCUA).

  The message read:
“Credit Union is constantly working to ensure security by regularly
screening the accounts in our system. We recently reviewed your account, and
we need more information to help us provide you with secure service. Until
we can collect this information, your access to sensitive account features
    will be limited.”

The message apologizes for the inconvenience and even gives a Case ID
number. It “reassures” the recipient that the account was not accessed by an
unauthorized third party and mentions that a key responsibility at the
“Credit Union” is “the safekeeping of the nonpublic personal
(‘confidential’) information you have entrusted to us....”

It then asks the recipient to confirm identity at a link.
The credit union advised the member to delete the message because it seemed
suspicious. However, the credit union was unsure because of the America’s
  Credit Unions logo.

Credit unions are urged to remind their members that their credit union, CUNA
and NCUA would never send an e-mail soliciting personal confidential
information. Phishing recipients should not open the link in the message.
Instead, they should delete the message.

Fraudulent E-mail Scams (also known as "Phishing")

A phishing e-mail targeting the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) website is circulating again, using the NCUA logo and graphics from the website to attempt to get information that could be used in future identity thefts. A sample of this e-mail is below.

The false e-mail asks for the recipient to click on a link to verify their credit union account registration. If the recipient does so, the link directed them to a false website and asked for their credit union account number and PIN, along with other personal information.

NCUA does not ask credit union members for such personal information. Anyone who receives an e-mail that purports to be from NCUA and asks for account information should consider it to be a fraudulent attempt to obtain their personal account data for an illegal purpose and should not follow the instructions in the e-mail.

If you responded to such an e-mail and provided any confidential account information, please notify your credit union immediately of the scam. You should also change your account’s PIN, and take any additional action recommended by your credit union to protect your account.

Formal complaints can be filed with www.IC3.gov.

In the past six months, several rounds of phishing e-mails have purported to come from NCUA and from CUNA, causing each to send out fraud alerts.

THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF A FRAUDULENT E-MAIL
