Fraudulent E-mail Scams (also known as "Phishing") January 11, 2006 Another phishing attempt from scammers posing as "CUNA Customer Support" has surfaced in e-mail inboxes at the League with the subject of "In attention of all Credit Union customers !". We have provided the email message below. Please note that the url behind the link to cuna-service.org (we have removed the link for your protection) is not a valid CUNA url.
September 20, 2005 New Phish asks for NCUA "security" renewal. CUNA News Now-Washington- The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) is the target of yet another phishing scam--this time attempting to scam people into "activating" an online account. The phishing e-mail is addressed to "Dear CU holder account" and says that "your Credit Union bank has joined our Federal Credit Union (FCU) network." THERE IS NO SUCH NETWORK. It then asks the recipient to activate an online account, using Social Security number and credit/debit card PIN. The e-mail's subject line reads "Confirm Your NCUA Identity" and uses graphics and text similar to the regulator's website. It claims to be from the "NCUA Account Reveiw Department." It also tries to draw in recipients with the claim "Please understatnd that this is a security measure intended to protect you and your account." The federal regulator emphasizes the importance of NOT responding to these e-mails on its website. NCUA does not ask credit union members for such personal information. Anyone who receives an e-mail that purports to be from NCUA and asks for account information should consider it to be a fraudulent attempt to obtain their personal account data for an illegal purpose and should not follow the instructions in the e-mail. Contact the credit union immediately if you receive such an e-mail. September 13, 2005
June 24, 2005 Fraudulent E-mail Scams (also known as "Phishing") A phishing e-mail targeting the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) website is circulating again, using the NCUA logo and graphics from the website to attempt to get information that could be used in future identity thefts. A sample of this e-mail is below. The false e-mail asks for the recipient to click on a link to verify their credit union account registration. If the recipient does so, the link directed them to a false website and asked for their credit union account number and PIN, along with other personal information. NCUA does not ask credit union members for such personal information. Anyone who receives an e-mail that purports to be from NCUA and asks for account information should consider it to be a fraudulent attempt to obtain their personal account data for an illegal purpose and should not follow the instructions in the e-mail. If you responded to such an e-mail and provided any confidential account information, please notify your credit union immediately of the scam. You should also change your account’s PIN, and take any additional action recommended by your credit union to protect your account. Formal complaints can be filed with www.IC3.gov.
